You don’t need to be a professional chef to impress this year — these simple sweet and savoury festive recipes are easy to make, budget-friendly, and guaranteed to fill your home with delicious smells.

Here are a few ideas to get you started this Christmas in Kent, Sussex or Epsom.

Peppermint Bark (Sweet Treat)

A classic festive favourite — and one of the easiest things you can make! Peppermint bark is perfect for gifting, snacking, or adding to a dessert table.

Ingredients:

  • 200g dark chocolate
  • 200g white chocolate
  • ½ tsp peppermint extract
  • 3–4 peppermint candy canes, crushed

Method:

  1. Line a baking tray with parchment paper.
  2. Melt the dark chocolate in a heatproof bowl over simmering water (or in short bursts in the microwave). Pour onto the tray and spread evenly.
  3. Let it set slightly in the fridge for about 10–15 minutes.
  4. Melt the white chocolate, stir in the peppermint extract, and pour it over the dark chocolate layer.
  5. Sprinkle the crushed candy canes on top while still soft.
  6. Chill for an hour, then break into pieces.

That’s it — a festive treat in under half an hour! You can find more easy variations from BBC Good Food’s peppermint bark recipe.

  3. Combine both mixtures, then fold in the mincemeat.
  4. Spoon into cases and bake for 15–18 minutes until golden.
